MotownHead was founded by Rob de Waal and Jos Vossen in the spring of 1982 to perform on the Nijmeegse 4-Daagse Feesten of that year in July. Motownhead started playing exclusively Motown covers. The band consisted of Rob de Waal on lead vocals and guitar, Jos Vossen on bass, Ben Beurskens on guitar and vocals, Jos Haagmans on keyboards and later followed up by Tudor Rutjes, and finally Ruud Eichorn on drums.

In 1985 MotownHead was extended with a brass-section which changed the sound of MotownHead significantly and made the whole thing more authentic. The first brass section consisted of Maurice Schmitz on trumpet, Henk Sanders on trumpet, Hans Verlaak on trumpet and several saxophone players among Robbert ?, Marijke ?, Maurice Smits and Harry van de Vorstenbosch who much later became a fixed member of the band.

1986 was an important year for MotownHead since Rob de Waal left MotownHead and soul lady Hilde Hadderingh entered the stage instead. With her charisma and great voice Hilde became the face of MotownHead since then. On drums Ruud Eichorn was followed up by Marcel van Haren and MotownHead started to extend their material besides Motown towards Stax and Atlantic too. From this year on MotownHead started to perform in Germany and Belgium occasionally too.

The changes that started in 1986 came to more of a finish in 1987 when Ben Beurskens left MotownHead and was followed up by soul singer Roy Labrijn. On drums Marcel van Haren was followed up by Vincent Kivits, on keyboards Tudor Rutjes was followed up by Thomas Dessing and on guitar Ben Beurskens was followed up by Rob van Boeckel. In 1990 Rob left MotownHead and male lead vocalist Roy Labrijn picked up the guitar instead. Besides Maurice Scmitz and Henk Sanders on trumpet the brass section of MotownHead was enforced by Ruud Chermin on tenor saxophone and Frans Heerema on Trombone. This turned out to be a very successful formation that lasted until 1992. Also a small and rawer rock 'n' soul version of MotownHead called "Soul Shake" entered the stage including Roy, Thomas, Vincent and Jos playing frequently live too.

In 1992 lead male vocalist and guitarist Roy Labrijn left MotownHead. Roy was followed up by Martinus Filemon on vocals and Roger Heijster on guitar. Also Frans Heerema left the band and was followed up by Ton Janssen on trombone. This turned out to be an important year for MotownHead since from then on the sound and repertoire of the band was slightly changed over the years into an even more authentic soul thing.

In 1994 lead male vocalist Martinus left the band and was followed up by Edward Rosier. The combination of Hilde and Edward turned out to be very fruitful. Marcel Joosten extended the brass section with his baritone saxophone. With Edward the smaller and rawer Soul Shake formation was reborn too. Edward, Roger, Thomas, Vincent and Jos played one raw soul set followed by a whirling crazy rock 'n' roll set and fun act named "The Legendary Mr. Eddy Ward and his Soul Shakers" including a live dance contest, the presentation of the Eddy Award and a golden record presentation for the notorious Eddy with which they played frequently in The Netherlands and Germany.

At the end of 1996 male lead vocalist Edward left MotownHead and was followed up by Franklin Batta and later by Ray Rothoff. Hilde and Ray turned out to be a great vocalist duo with Ray as an energetic front man and Hilde as the Dutch Dusty Springfield. Also Marcel Joosten left MotownHead, on tenor saxophone Ruud Chermin was followed up by Harry van de Vorstenbosch  and on trumpet Henk Sanders was followed up by Louis Peters. In 1999 this version of MotownHead played live on the TV Gelderland television program Soundcheck and performed on a big show with Hot Chocolate on the Tempelhof airport in Berlin, Germany.

In 2000 male lead vocalist Ray left MotownHead and was followed up by soul singer Jay Ferrero. In 2001 Ruud Chermin joined the band again on tenor saxophone and Harry van de Vorstenbosch picked up his baritone saxophone extending the MotownHead brass section from a 4-piece into a 5-piece full blown soul section. From this period on MotownHead slowly started playing less and less until in 2002 the band almost decided to stop.

2002 was a critical year for MotownHead. It has been 20 years since it's start in 1982 and after many years being the face and major vocalist of the band female lead vocalist Hilde Hadderingh unfortunately decided to stop with MotownHead. After a long internal contemplation and an offer of production company IMM for selling the live show of MotownHead into theatres in the Netherlands, MotownHead decided to go on. Musical cat Joyce Stevens took the place of Hilde on female lead vocals. Unfortunately IMM got broke and no shows where booked finally, but MotownHead kept the soul alive anyway. MotownHead released their CD "SOUL" which was a compilation of MotownHead performances from 1991 until 2000. In the end 2003 turned out to be a very good year for MotownHead. In June 2003 MotownHead had it's 20th Anniversary Party which was completely sold out. MotownHead drummer Vincent Kivit left the band and was followed up by Peter Hengst and later by Johnny Lejeune. Also in 2003 MotownHead had one of it's highlights since it's start in 1982, namely contributing to the release of the Grammy awarded music documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" in the Benelux including a performance on the beach in Scheveningen with former original Funk Brothers drummer Uriel Jones and keyboardist Ivory Joe Hunter as well guitarist and producer Alan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky with Ivory Joe Hunter stating on stage: "You guys sure know what you're doing!"

In 2004 lead male vocalist Jay Ferrero was followed up by US soul singer and stage animal Mr. J.J. Johnson, on tenor saxophone Ruud Chermin was followed up by Niek Ulrich and on trumpet Louis Peters was followed up by Hans van Houdt. The vocal combination of Joyce and J.J. turned out to be very successful for MotownHead with great performances and great live energy that turned every audience on including successful performances on festivals like Jazz in the Woods, Jazz in Duketown and the Film By The Sea festival. In 2006 Wim & Ria Wigt from Wigt Productions asked MotownHead to pick up their theatre concert show again which resulted in Wigt Productions starting to offer "The Ultimate 60's Soul Show" of MotownHead for which the first theatre concert show was programmed in the fall of 2006.

Early 2007 leading soul brother and male vocalist Mr. J.J. Johnson left MotownHead and was followed up by U.S. soul preacher and soul dancer Brandon Delagraentiss and veteran soul singer Eddie Taylor. With Joyce, Eddie and Brandon MotownHead possesses a great dynamic and whirling front trio. As such MotownHead is combining an energetic soulful Sam & Dave like soul brother duo with the stunning performance of Joyce; hot, spicy and juicy! Together with the groovy funky rhythm section Soul Shake, including Roger, Jos, Thomas and Johnny, and the Soul Horns, including Maurice, Harry, Ton, Niek, and Hans, MotownHead is groovier and sexier then ever before! 2007 is also a magical year since it has been 25 years ago that MotownHead started as a band. This quarter of a century of soul from MotownHead will be celebrated in a big soul party and soul concert on 2 November 2007 in the LUX Theatre in Nijmegen. Also, MotownHead will release their latest album "Soul Times" too. With this strong soul formation MotownHead will continue performing in theatres, festivals and soul parties all over...!
